Coniferous pulpwood (spruce, pine) are small-diameter round timber (6–24 cm) intended for pulp and paper mills (PPM). Length: 2, 4, or 6 m. Harvested from small-diameter trees and the top part of the trunk. Application: sulfate and sulfite pulp cooking, production of wood pulp. Coniferous long fibers provide strength to paper and cardboard. GOST 9463-2016. Shipment: railway wagons, timber trucks. Pulpwood harvesting: during cut-to-length logging (harvester-forwarder method), small-diameter timber and top parts of trunks with a diameter <14 cm are unsuitable for sawing and are directed to PPM. During full-tree harvesting, pulpwood is separated at the lower landing. Sulfate (kraft) cooking: pulpwood is chipped and cooked in a solution of NaOH + Na₂S at 170°C — lignin dissolves, cellulose fibers are released. Pulp yield: 45–50% of wood mass. Coniferous pulp: long fibers (3–4 mm) provide tensile strength to paper and cardboard. Used for kraft paper, sacks, corrugated cardboard. Logistics: timber trucks, railway wagons (flatcars with stakes). Stacking at the lower landing. Moisture content of fresh pulpwood: 40–60%.
