Fodder oats (Avena sativa) are a grain crop for feeding horses, cattle, pigs, and poultry. A traditional staple in horse diets, they provide stable energy without overexciting the nervous system due to their high fiber and fat content. Metabolisable energy is 10.5–11.5 MJ/kg (lower than barley due to hulls). Protein 10–12%, fat 4–6% (higher than barley and wheat — an additional energy source), fiber 9–12%. Amino acid profile is better than barley: lysine content 4.2 g/kg, threonine 3.6 g/kg. Hull content (huskiness) 24–30% is a key technological factor. Hulls reduce energy value for monogastrics (pigs, poultry) but provide feed structure for horses and ruminants. Hull-less varieties are an alternative for pig farming. GOST 28673-2019. Test weight ≥460 g/l (Grade 1), ≥400 g/l (Grade 2). Moisture ≤14%. Shipment: grain trucks, hoppers. For horses, oats are an essential feed: high fat content ensures coat shine and endurance, hull fiber stimulates peristalsis, and moderate energy prevents overexcitement (unlike barley). Feeding rate: 3–6 kg/day for working horses. Storage: dry, ventilated warehouses with moisture and granary weevil infestation control.
