Feed barley (Hordeum vulgare) is a grain forage crop for the production of compound feed and direct fattening of pigs, cattle, and poultry. Russia is among the top five global barley producers with an annual volume exceeding 20 million tons. Barley is the main grain component in pig diets (up to 70%) and cattle diets (up to 40%), providing high energy value with good digestibility. Metabolisable energy 12.0–12.5 MJ/kg. Protein 10–12%, starch 50–55%, fiber 4–6%. Lysine is the first limiting amino acid: 3.5 g/kg, requiring balancing with synthetic lysine in pig diets. Barley starch is digested faster than corn starch, ensuring stable average daily weight gain. Test weight is an indicator of grain plumpness: from 570 g/l (grade 2) to 630+ g/l (grade 1). Moisture ≤14.5%. Admixture, grain impurities, and pest infestation are regulated by GOST 28672-2019. Sourcing regions: Central Black Earth Region, Volga region, Western Siberia, Krasnodar Krai. Shipment: grain trucks, rail hoppers, 20/40 ft containers. Compared to corn, barley contains less energy but more fiber, improving gastrointestinal motility in pigs and reducing the risk of stomach ulcers. Rolled barley (processed on a roller mill) increases starch digestibility by 8–12%. Storage: elevators with active ventilation, grain temperature ≤25°C, moisture ≤14%.
